2011 Youth Leadership Alliance Program
The Youth Leadership Alliance (YLA) a program of the Virginia Peninsula Chamber Foundation is designed provide students the opportunity to develop their leadership skills and apply them within their communities. The mission of YLA is to develop student community leaders who possess the skills, confidence and tools to make a difference in their own lives while becoming effective role models in the community. Thirty Newport News School Division rising 11th grade student council members have been selected to participate in the YLA class of 2011. The program begins with a parent, student orientation on Monday, June 13th, 6: 30- 8:00 p.m. at Peninsula Workforce Development Center. This program was developed by Doug Carper of the Newport News Fire Department and Denise Owen with Bay Port Credit Union, alumni of Leadership Institute class of 2007. This is a cooperative measure between six participating Newport News Public Schools, Chamber staff, YLA Advisory Board.
