INFLOW INFILTRATION MONITORING SPECIALIST – WASTEWATER

GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES Under limited supervision, this position is responsible for performing skilled and technical work in the inspection and repair of sanitary sewer operations. Reports to a Crew Supervisor.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Installs and operates closed-circuit camera equipment to inspect, analyze and detect leaks, cracks and other defects and damages in existing sanitary sewer lines; tests and determines the condition of pipe joints, notes the location of any damaged pipe and reports these to the supervisor.
Installs manhole inserts, cleans and repairs manholes, vents and measures distance covered and depth of manholes, uses chemical detectors in deep manholes; and performs smoke tests to determine leaks in the sewer lines.
Operates the closed-circuit television truck, crash truck, camera crawler and transporter, pole and lateral cameras and the combination vactor/flusher to clean sewer systems to include manholes, laterals, mainlines and wet wells; and uses various hand tools.
Maintains and performs routine and difficult repairs on mechanical, electrical, and electronic equipment such as generators, air compressors, pressure gauges, television equipment, and pumps and circuitry associated with the televising and repair operation; flushes tanks and replaces relay switches.
Ensures the safety of City equipment, private property, and others by following proper safety procedures, watching for overhead utility lines, and checking for traffic and underground utilities; sets up traffic control devices.
Trains equipment operators and technicians as needed; answers questions from the public concerning the inspection and repair of sanitary sewer lines; and maintains detailed records on inspection and repair activities. Performs other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE • Inflow and Infiltration – Knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures used in maintaining and repairing sewer systems and equipment used in closed circuit camera inspecting and repair. • Equipment Operation - Knowledge of the proper procedures for operating, inspecting and maintaining assigned equipment. • Safety - Knowledge of occupational hazards, safety precautions, and safety regulations related to equipment operation and general construction work. Knowledge of traffic laws and regulations governing the operation of equipment. • Customer Service – Thorough knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer service. This includes setting and meeting quality standards for services and evaluation of customer satisfaction.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Requires a High School Diploma and 2-4 years of work experience in inflow and infiltration work or related mechanical or electrical experience in a similar or closely related environment or any combination of equivalent education and experience. Successful completion of the Pipeline Assessment Certification Program is also required.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS Requires satisfactory results from a pre-employment medical evaluation; pre-employment substance abuse testing and is subject to random alcohol and controlled substance testing. Requires a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record. Must obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) permit prior to employment and complete the practical portion of the CDL test to include Tanker endorsement within 60 days of employment. Must successfully complete the required National Incident Management System (NIMS) Incident Command System Certifications and the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Flagger and Basic Work Zone Traffic Control Certifications within one year of employment.
